Mike Cope's blog

A couple people got into the spirit of what I was trying to start on June 17. Go back and look at the 19th comment by Chris. I have a problem with the whole "dusk over dawn" thing (didn't God mean for the day to begin at 5:00 a.m.?) and the sports movies over actual sports -- :) -- but his words are like peeking in on holy ground. Plus, I like the list. Beatles over Beach Boys. TX bbq over NC bbq. His mom's chicken pot pie. Jokes that aren't at anyone's expense. "And feeling my son kick at [my wife's] belly before I go to sleep." Anyone else want to do their list?

  • Impeccable taste, amigo! Anyone who would choose Neil Diamond over JT . . . well, they've just stumbled onto the wrong blog. So, good on ya. Taylor, Clapton--guitar as it was meant to be played. :)

Keep it comin' folks. What makes your day brighter? (Partly we're participating in creation theology here --something Ecclesiastes would undoubtedly endorse.) What are the daily gifts that bring you joy? Bring it on!

I love cuddling with all my kids whether we adopted 'em or birthed 'em. I love how much I like my wife.

[My apologies to Serena who likes watching "The Wiggles" with her grandchildren. I had just finished writing my list when I saw yours! Hey -- when my kids want to watch them, I'll watch it, too. We even took them to a live Wiggles show last fall! Come to think of it, it's probably just the Wiggles overload talking...]

  • Well, Matt, I have to tell you that about a month ago, my husband and I were babysitting our three grandchildren, ages 1 to 3, when one of them wanted to watch an "iyo" (video). We had a couple of the Wiggles to choose from but we were at a time-share and couldn't figure out how to make the DVD work. All three toddlers tried to "help" by picking up and aiming one of the four remotes at the TV. When Jim finally got the thing going, I wasn't sure if I loved the Wiggles or hated the them.

  • Yep! Serena and the LORD has doubly (triply???) blessed me with 5 of the most beautiful, intelligent, capable, gifted great grandkids you can imagine. :)

Looking down others' lists, there are so many that should have been included in my list, and some I'd have listed the other way around, such as I prefer Costco over Sam's and do wish we had one here. Also, am so touched by our Wed. night Oasis worship time. In fact, have said that I love it so much, if we had communion you'd probably never see me on Sunday. LOL (joke, kids, joke) - and miss the Oasis dinners in the summertime.

My list should have included the magnificent West Texas sunsets, but do prefer corn tortillas except when the meal includes dishes from northern Mexico, am also devotee of Guacamole!!!!! :)

    In the 'druthers' column
I'd druther have two services in the summertime, as well as some way to continue the Oasis dinners during the summer, but then, everyone deserves a bit of down time so will continue to miss the later service on Sundays and also miss sharing mealtime and conversation during the Oasis meals. Also, since Fall is prefered over Summer anytime, I doubly prefer Fall, since both of my 'druthers' are fulfilled during that blessed, cool season. :)

  • I already did one, but these are so great I have to keep going. this one is non-comparitive and simply lists those things that make my day

    i love...

rich mullins, tom waits, chris rice, and brian houston.

communicating with others to sharpen my mind and soften my spirit.

    bonhoeffer, manning, muggeridge, and craddock.

cameron crowe films, john cusack films, films based on nick hornby books.

nick hornby, ralph ellison, john steinbeck, and g.k. chesterton.

hush puppies, mac and cheese, and mashed potatoes with the skins.

independent record stores and the people who work in them, 50 year old guys in classic rock cover bands, and concerts where the audience would prefer to sit than stand.

bob dylan, david gray, over the rhine, and martyn joseph.

steve stockman, the books he writes, and the radio show he has on the BBC.

washing dishes with my wife, working garage sales with my wife, buying groceries with my wife.

ben arthur, ben christophers, ben folds, ben harper, and ben kweller

evening walks with Rachel, waking up with Rachel, trading e-mails with Rachel throughout my day.

mike cope's blog, my own blog, the humility that comes with knowing i have less to say at this point than he does.

being 28, being 6 years married in August, being a first time dad in September, being ill-prepared for all great adventures.

having Rachel to share the adventure with.

sharing the Lord's Supper with Rachel, studying the Bible with Rachel, praying with Rachel, working in ministry with Rachel.

the fact that I get paid to do what I love.

counseling people, serving people, teaching people, and sitting with people.

love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

our God, from whom all good gifts come.

His Spirit that lives within Him, and within His Son, and within His church, and within me.

the fact that I'd be nowhere without Him.

By Blogger Clarissa, at 6/22/2004 08:48:00 AM

  • Uh oh--

Clarissa and Mike have both trampled two non-negotiables....

It's Mac over PC and salty yellow cornbread, people. I suppose God could be big enough to love even people who "prefer" the wrong platform and have suspect taste in cornbread (if it was supposed to be sweet, they shoulda called it corncake)-- but I'll be praying for the souls of you both.

Of course, being a Tennessee transplant and natively accustomed to California and Nevada ('ve only been in the south now for about 17 years, I'm still getting used to things...) I'm willing to admit the possibility that I'm wrong on the cornbread issue. But Windows? That's just wrong. And I had such respect for you, Mike... I'm gonna hafta change my username to "Disillusioned."
