From my journal 12 years ago today (7/2/92): Dear Father, This morning at 2:42, I got to welcome Christopher Warren Cope into this world. What a marvelous blessing--to experience this joy for the third time. Already this son has captured my heart. My head spins with questions about his future. What will he enjoy? Will he mind having an "older" dad? Where will he go to school? Whom will he marry? What will he do for a job? All these questions are implicit in birth. But my only prayer, Lord, is that he be full of your Spirit. Help him be a boy and man who is intoxicated with your love, eager to follow you. Please, please protect him from the values and behaviors of this world that aren't in line with your kingdom. May he come to know you--the God who fully redeemed him in Jesus Christ!

  • All I remember is feeling so sorry for your wife! When I went to say goodbye before going to Kenya the May before Christopher was born Diane was on bed rest with pregnant diabetes. Matt and Megan were running around. Wasn’t she also trying to finish some college courses? I was just a babysitter and I felt a little bad leaving her! Where you still in that first house? All I know is things were really looking up when I returned in August. Chris was such a cute baby!
What would we have done without the Chris-man? I know he has probably grown beyond my ability recognize him. In my mind he is still three or four. I have no doubt that he is a fine young man.
My Nana said that parents should be given presents on the child's birthday. After all, the parents helped make it all possible! So Happy “You’re-a-Dad!” day to you! Tell Diane looking back I don’t know how she did it... grace under fire! Your children are very blessed to have two such incredible people as parents, and we are all blessed to know you.

  • SG - You are part of why Diane and I survived those hard years. Last night I showed Diane your comment in my blog about your "little charge/friend Megan." When we were sleepless, disheveled, distressed, and upset, your calm, organized spirit took over. We'll never, ever forget that. Megan was indeed both your "charge" and your "friend." Thanks.

  • Teary eyed smiles coming at you! You so just made my day! I could write a book on the Megan years but, I would probably spell her name wrong! Anyway, I keep thinking I will see that Book from you or Diane or both one of these days.
Hard to explain it all! I daily reap the blessings of knowing your family, specifically your daughter. If you ever run out of memories (like you ever could!) I have lots to share.

    Does anyone have a kleenex?

  • Christopher, I hope someday you sit down and read all the wonderful things you dad has written to you and about you. I know that you have never minded having him as your dad. He cherishes you.
