I mentioned a couple months ago that my Thursday carpool is a bit quiet--a carload of 6th grade boys. Well, it no longer sounds like a library on the way to Lincoln Middle School. Why have they started blabbering all the way to school? I attribute it to two things: 1. Baseball. Though we haven't been able to agree on the NL team to root for, we have been unified in our support for the Red Sox. Not that any of us are huge Sox fans, but "the enemy of my enemy is my friend." Nothing can unite a car of taciturn males quite like baseball. 2. Oldies Music. Who knew? These kids all love my oldies stuff. They were raised in proper homes! They can sing along to the Beatles, 3 Dog Night, Lynyrd Skynrd, Sly, CCR, etc. Put on B. W. Stevenson singing "My Maria," and the place explodes. And there is the formula for male bonding: oldies music and baseball playoffs. Just thought you'd want to know.

  • While visiting with me this past weekend, my 4-year old nephew asked if I had any cds. I answered that I did and he asked if I had "Sweet Home Alabama". Of course, (I am my daddy's daughter!) It was so great to hear that high pitched voice sing..."where the skies are s'blue.

  • Who knew? My 16 yr. old daughter is crazy about Frank Sinatra and is way into "Boston". My 14 yr. old son prefers Queen and Steve Miller Band. Of course they also listen to stuff I can't begin to decipher. I suppose good music, like good theology, will stand the test of time.

Thanks for making me think, laugh and/or smile each morning. You are a blessing!

P.S. Hurrah! The "evil empire" has fallen!

  • See? Forget that "Wild at Heart" junk... Write your own series, something like playing ball with Jesus or something less... inane. Also, it should have a soundtrack.

  • Can't BELIEVE you didn't mention anything about the Yankees going down! UNBELIEVABLE! Wonder how much money you could have won in Vegas by betting on the Red Sox after they were down 3-zip? Somebody is eating steak tonight! Not that I am advocating gambling.
Now if we can just knock the Rocket out early in St. Louis, we will have the perfect World Series. We are due to run him....just once is all we ask, right? Didn't the Cards and Red Sox play in the 67 World Series?

BOTH my boys would rather listen to 70's music than any other kind. I beat myself up in that I didn't expose them to contemporary Christian music at an early age, but I hope they will have my grandkids listen to it more than anything else. Matt has just about everything JT ever recorded, and Luke has just about anything EVERYBODY recorded in the 70's, except the punk or acid stuff. Jan and I are going to see Chicago and Earth, Wind and Fire with Jimmie and Andee this coming weekend, and we are like teenagers we are so giddy! :) Hope I can borrow a lighter from somebody!

  • My 6-year old son requested Springsteen in the car on the way to kindergarten this morning. Last week he kept asking for Mellencamp's "Paper in Fire". It's hard to imagine a prouder daddy.

  • You guys are so confused. It's not baseball that predicts presidential elections, it's football. The Redskins to be exact. And, they're superbly accurate. Haven't been wrong in the past 17 elections. Check it out: http://www.snopes.com/sports/football/election.asp

  • All the best music mankind has ever known was recorded before 1970. :)
