Thoughts about the World Series: Where is Bob Gibson when you need him? And who's the little league coach who taught Jeff Suppan how to run bases? I'm not giving up yet. The Sox came from 3-0 to beat the Yankees. - - - - Great Zoe meeting in Nashville yesterday. Brandon was talking about what a good week he had in Abilene last week. He said that it was a little strange in chapel on Friday when nearly all the songs were from Zoe CDs and were being sung exactly as he (and others who work with Zoe) had arranged them. I told him to be sure no one sneezes during one of the recordings because all over the country, people will sneeze at that point in the song. Those of you out there in blogland who've been coming to Zoe Conferences -- what suggestions do you have for the future? We're talking and praying about various templates besides the one we've used the last few years. We'd love to hear from you--drop a note to Randy Gill, Brandon Scott Thomas, or me. In the afternoon, I worked in a Baja Burrito and a Wineskins meeting with Greg Taylor, Rubel, and Phil Herrington (one of our board members). We reminisced a lot about the early, somewhat explosive, days of Wineskins--and dreamed about the future. - - - - We went to see "Napoleon Dynamite" this weekend with Mark and Gina Lewis. This is a PG . . . repeat, PG . . . movie. Incredibly funny.

  • Mike,

You struck a nerve with this post. Nape is so terribly funny! I've seen it 3 times and would gladly go to a 4th. Some of my favorite lines (there were so many) include:

Napoleon Dynamite : Stay home and eat all the freakin' chips, Kip.
Kip : Napoleon, don't be jealous that I've been chatting online with babes all day. Besides, we both know that I'm training to be a cage fighter.
Napoleon Dynamite : Since when, Kip? You have the worst reflexes of all time.
Kip : Try and hit me, Napoleon.
    Napoleon Dynamite : What?
Kip : I said come down here and see what happens if you try and hit me.

Napoleon Dynamite : Hey can I use your guys's phone for a sec?
Secretary No. 1 : Is there anything wrong?
Napoleon Dynamite : I don't feel very good.
    [takes telephone and dials number]
Kip : [making nachos on the other line] Hi.
Napoleon Dynamite : Is grandma there?
Kip : No, she's getting her hair done.
    Napoleon Dynamite : Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...
Kip : What do you need?
Napoleon Dynamite : Can you just go get her for me?
Kip : I'm really busy right now.
Napoleon Dynamite : Just tell her to come get me.
    Kip : Why?
Napoleon Dynamite : Cause I don't feel good!
Kip : Well, have you talked to the school nurse?
Napoleon Dynamite : No, she doesn't know anything. Will you just come get me?
    Kip : No.
Napoleon Dynamite : Well, will you do me a favor then? Can you bring me my chapstick?
    Kip : No, Napoleon.
Napoleon Dynamite : But my lips hurt real bad!
Kip : Just borrow some from the school nurse. I know she has like five sticks in her drawer.
Napoleon Dynamite : I'm not gonna use hers, you sicko!
    Kip : See ya.
    Napoleon Dynamite : Ugh! Idiot!

Uncle Rico : So how are things going with you and your girlfriend?
Kip : Well, I think it's getting pretty serious. We chat online for like two hours a day so yeah, you could say it's getting pretty serious.

A must see movie in my book.

  • Loved being with you yesterday. It's never long enough...well, the time together that is.

I can't wait to see that movie. Craig Fisher and Stephen Bailey have threatened me within an inch of my life if I don't. I hear it's quite funny.

I was really loving where our discussion was headed yesterday. Som much for not having to re-invent the wheel for Fresno!

  • Heck yes! It's an awesome movie.

Ahh- future Zoe conferences... Wish we had 7 days together! That a good enough request?

Just joking, but will email you with some things I would recommend as a young guy.

  • Hey Mike,

Sorry about your Cards. The lack of dominant starting pitching is the problem for sure. The Red Sox seem to be a team of destiny (three generations of New Englanders have been waiting to have that said). As for Suppan, I wouldn't let my 10 year old watch the instant replay of that boneheaded play. He doesn't need to know what happened, he just needs to know that you have to be at your smartest on the base paths.

As for future Zoe Conferences, I would like to see one thing change. The early afternoon session (right after lunch) was the least enjoyable for me. I would personally like to either have a time of singing and prayer or another "breakout" session with some more of the classes being repeated. There were so many that I wanted to attend but just couldn't.

    God Bless

  • Mike, Mike, Mike. Go, Go, Go. No, No, No. Refer back to the ALCS to see what the Red Sox have overcome (vs. the Yankees, first to do what they did, put on the Yanks the girdle of greatest joke job ever, made Rivera look human, danced in Yankee Stadium, so-whated the Nomar trade and we lost A-Rod hubub). No way that gets turned against them by a St. Louis squad that rolled over and died after Suppan bumped Lonnie Smith from the WS Base Running Hall of Shame. They learned (humility) what the Yanks did not. As Rod Stewart sang, "Tonight's the night."

  • Since my lovely wife suffers from SAS (Sporting Apathy Syndrome), you were on my incredibly short list (2 to be exact) to call if our local Series connections were to pan out with extra tickets. As of yesterday, no dice. There's always next year...E

  • My condolences, Mike! ;)

I just had a hunch the Red Sox were going to take home the Championship. Usually I'm a NL fan, but the Sox just HAD to make history this year. What a beautiful team! Have to say I loved it!! Sorry about the Cards. Maybe next year.

  • In answer to your question, "Where is Bob Gibson when you need him?" -- I think he got a geri curl, changed his name to Pedro Martinez and pitches for the Red Sox now.
