Two days ago we still had a pre-teen in our house. But no longer. With our boys now 23 and 13, we're very thankful for all the people God has brought into their lives who have encouraged and nurtured them. And I can't help but say this (again): after the wreck in January, we're so thankful that our son has lived to see his 13th birthday. - - - - One thing I loved about Costa Rica and Alaska was that neither got very hot. We had a high each day of about 75 in San Jose, CR, and it got up to about 65-70 in Alaska. That's my idea of summer weather! Friday it was 101 in Abilene! One of God's greatest inventions was AC. - - - - I'm reading Grisham's newest novel, THE BROKER. Much of it is about the difficulty a middle-aged man is having trying to learn a new language. Hmmm.

  • I bet in heaven the temp never breaks 70. Heaven will surely be worth it all. And Amen on the AC.

  • We're listening to THE BROKER on our trip. What I want to know is---are you pretendidng to be Canadian at the same time? It all sounds pretty difficult to me. More power to you as you learn! We miss you.

  • Here's a poem my dad came up with years ago:

    I wonder quite a lot
That if Hell is so hot,
    It stands to reason
    That heaven must be freezin'.

  • Happy Birthday Chris!!! I am so glad that you are celebrating your 13th birthday. It won't be long before our baby is a teenager...yikes!
Mike, we have missed you but you deserve time away...to rest, to learn, to read for fun, to be with Chris and Diane, to play, and to have some time alone.
grace and peace to you, Julie

  • I'm on about the 5th chapter of the Broker. Fun, so far. We ate lunch at Olive Garden today and I hate to admit I wondered if Joel Backman could have pronounced the Italian names yet! I truly am a book geek!

  • We hit triple digits in Fresno this week too. The difference is, our AC at church is out of commission and will remain so for the next few weeks. It will be interesting to see how many people hang in there through the hot summer months and how many go somewhere more comfortable until we can cool our auditorium down again.

I've been reading alot lately about wanting to be "comfortable" in the church and how God's desire for us is often to do what is uncomfortable. I guess we're going to live it out here for a while.

  • Listening to Jerry Taylor yesterday, I wondered if there are any black preachers preaching for predominantly white Churches of Christ or vice-versa. Can anyone think of any? It will be embarrassing if the answer is what I think it is.

Worse, how often are black preachers even considered by predominantly white churches (or vice-versa) when pulpit vacancies present themselves?
