No offense to my NY friends, but would someone please stop the Yankees? They have underperformed this year (considering they have the best team money can buy), but that doesn't mean they won't wake up from their coma and win the World Series if they make the playoffs. Keep the Evil Empire out of the postseason. - - - - Tiger won't break Nicklaus's majors record (18). You read it here. Are you out there, Boone? Am I right? (By the way, heard you did great with the Senior PGA for the Golf Channel last weekend.) - - - - We made a trip to the emergency room last night to have Chris's ankle x-rayed. The doctor said, "Well, whatever's wrong, he looks better than the last time I saw him." That was January 16, before he was put on a place to fly to Cook's. This morning we helped him forget about his ankle pain by having four teeth extracted. - - - - ACU pays me to teach 18- and 19-year-old students about Jesus. Go figure. - - - - I don't understand the popularity of Hummers. - - - - Guacamole is my food addiction; Diet Dr. Pepper is my drink addiction. If Jesus were alive today, he'd turn the water to Diet DP. Especially after he read all the stuff on how it wasn't really wine, anyway. On a normal day, I can get by on one can. If I put down a second can, you can tell the stress level is high. (NOTE: Jesus is very much alive today. I mean, "If he were still here in the flesh like he was in the gospels.")

  • How do you feel about Diet Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper? It is my very favorite soda--yum yum!
Leah in Denver (and ACU alumni)

  • We almost took Max in to have his neck looked at last night. I love football. (Is there a smiley with its tongue in its cheek?) And Regular Cherry Vanilla DP is my favorite too, Leah, but I gotta have the sugar.

  • I love that everyone counted the Yankees out and today they were tied for the Wild Card. Love it. I think it was on this very blog that a guy named "Ed" declared how happy he was that the Yanks weren't going to make the postseason. Ed, oh, Ed.

I'm sitting here watching the Yanks play the Blue Jays and Mike, you would love the hustle play A-Rod just made! Best all around player in the league.

Evil Empire? Call us whatever you want. We'll see you in October.

  • I support the Nicklaus legacy. The Golder Bear will never fall.

By Blogger Byron, at 8/23/2005 08:00:00 PM

  • You tell 'em Joe. There's no stopping the Yankees.

By Blogger kenny, at 8/23/2005 08:03:00 PM

  • Joe H - enjoy your Yanks - you can have 'em. Hopefully, they will stub their collective toe before post season and we can wave bye-bye to the "evil empire" - [love that title!]

On the other hand, I'm watching a wonderous pitching duel between two of the best - Roger Clemens of Houston Astros, and Jake Peavey, of my San Diego Padres, the latter leading 1-0 in the bottom of the 5th. Those two are true artists, imho.

  • MC, one can of wine is all you need? :) I can hear it now....
"Mike Cope advocates drinking wine on his blog!" Count on it.

I posted today about our first day of chapel as Sophs 30 years ago. Those big chops of yours were a babe magnet! :)

  • UNTIL Tiger wins numero 18 (and that WILL happen) Nicklaus is still the greatest. Actually, until he wins number 19 (and he will) Nicklaus will be considered the greatest. We're watching history in the making Mike and Byron, enjoy it.
BTW, my favorite baseball team is always whomever is playing the Yanks.

By Blogger Stephen Bailey, at 8/23/2005 09:05:00 PM

  • How many different flavors are they trying to put in one can?! I think I saw a diet cherry vanilla lime strawberry remix sprite the other day.

  • It's horrible, Mike. Say it ain't so.....say it ain't so. Not the hated Yankees. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

By Blogger Ed Harrell, at 8/24/2005 05:30:00 AM

  • Yankees? Nah. Here come the Cleveland Indians! I am a Detroit Tigers fan, but I now live in Indians country (and the Tigers haven't arrived yet). The Tribe has won 6 in a row, they are currently tied for the wild card spot, and they have a very favorable schedule the rest of the way.

I swore off soda a few years ago, and drink bottled water almost exclusively -- and I've never felt better. OK, I also drink a lot of coffee.....

The Soviet Union is back and playing baseball?

  • Mike, I was reading your post on my PDA phone while driving my Hummer through New York on the way to watch my favorite team - the Yankees. I just wanted to let you know that when I read the part about ACU paying you I almost spilt my Coke (I love Coke. I hate Diet Dr. Pepper) which would have been terrible because I wouldn't have had anything to wash down my guacamole - which I also hate but was eating because George Stienbrener was in the car with me and he made me some and I didn't want to upset George. Anyway, if I were ACU, I wouldn't let you speak - let alone pay you! I mean, you speak lies! Grant Boone did not cover the Senior PGA last weekend. No way my friend. He covered the "Reno-Tahoe Open" which pits the best golfers in the world against each other. Well actually, the 64 best played in the NEC Invitational - but it was not the Senior PGA my friend. You can say a lot of bad things, but you can't dis the Boone!

    Tiger Woods

By Blogger Joel Quile, at 8/24/2005 06:28:00 AM

  • Mike,

How cool! Tiger Woods commented on your blog! I just wanted you to know that I agree with you about the guacamole and that Jesus is alive and well.

By Blogger Joel Quile, at 8/24/2005 06:29:00 AM

  • Ewwww. Baptism in Diet Dr. Pepper. Ewwww.

By Blogger Keith Brenton, at 8/24/2005 06:57:00 AM

  • Top 5 reasons why Tiger will blow Nicklaus' record away:

    1. Tiger is over half-way there and not even 30 years old yet.

    2. Historically golfers play their best golf in their 30's.

    3. Tiger has won 10 majors while undergoing 2 major swing changes.

    4. Tiger is determined.

    5. He's the only golfer with a website dedicated to him titled Tigerisgod.com (how could he lose?)

See you at major win #19 in the next 10 years. (Now if he would just lose the filthy language...)

By Blogger Brad, at 8/24/2005 07:17:00 AM

  • Not to worry Brother - The Indians are coming to the rescue!

I spoke with a friend of mine in the Advancement Office at Harding yesterday and he says, to quote Norm, that for the last four days it's been a dog eat dog world and he's been wearing milkbone underware. He says that he has been getting killed by calls from "Triple A" (Alums Against Ann).

    By Blogger J A Pierpont, at 8/24/2005 08:18:00 AM

  • Tiger will break Nicklaus' record. If I say "it's a Black thing" will everyone know I'm joking?
And even if Tiger doesn't break Nicklaus' records he's already the greatest golfer ever, considering he's the higest profile person in the world and today's composition is tougher than ever and courses harder than ever and even The Golden Bear will tell you that.

And Tehoka Joe, I hope the Yanks make the playoffs. It was awesome seeing them lose four straight Sox last year.

By Blogger Sean, at 8/24/2005 08:46:00 AM

  • Not only will Tiger break the major record, but he will break Sneads's most wins record (which is 73). Tiger is already at 45 wins and 10 majors, and not even 30 years old.

    Wishful thinking, Mike.

  • Hey, I've never left a comment directly under the person whose book I'm reading right now ("Come To The Table"...run, don't walk, and get your copy).

Of course you know I hate the Yankees...but they do amazing things in September. I wish I could count them out but I just can't. Fortunately, my team is the only one to have a winning record against them in the past 10 years, so if the Angels play them in the postseason, we'll be just fine.

    Yeah...Tiger will do it. Sorry.

And, OH how I LOVES the Pepsi!

    By Blogger Thurman8er, at 8/24/2005 09:16:00 AM

  • Who cares about the Yanks. Their pitching staff will fail in the first round. You should be worrying about your Cards. If Houston and Atlanta make it to the playoffs, I am not sure your Cards will make it out of the National League Championship.

    I don't get hummers either.

Diet Dr. Pepper is my drug of choice as well.

Tiger will break the record. I don't see anyone who will keep him from it.

  • What has changed my walk is that Jesis is not alive on earth today - Jesus, the man! He died, rose, ascended to the throne and there He remains! He said one of the reasons He has to was so He could leave us the Holy Spirit who is better than having Jesus here as one man. Jesus should alway be the central message. But my question is this: WHY DON'T WE PREACH MORE ABOUT THE ASPECT OF THE TRINTY WHO IS HERE NOW, THE HOLY SPIRIT??? The more we acknowledge the Holy Spirit in our lives the more He works His power in our lives...The more we acknowledge Him in the pulpit, the more we will see the Holy Spirit work in the Church!!!

  • I think the "Jesus-made-non-alcoholic-wine" is my favorite Church of Christ "doctrine". I have several others, but naming them gets me in trouble.

Do you think Jesus would make Caffeine Free Diet Dr. Pepper if he were alive today?

By Blogger Blaine Tucker, at 8/24/2005 10:30:00 AM

  • Mike,
I don't comment often, but had to say I wonder if there's ever been a church split over baseball?

I mean, come on, my friend. Such ugly and offensive words coming out of your mouth. I don't care if you drink wine, I don't care if you have instruments in the service, I don't care if you drink out of one cup or have Sunday school, but for goodness sake...don't bad mouth my Yankees!

I think you caused me to stumble.

Fortunately, I love Diet DP and guacamole also. Maybe we can just agree to disagree on other matters.
(see you soon in Nashville. We're trying to get Avery a ticket to come with us.)

  • I about spit my rice on my monitor when I read Tiger Woods post!

    Clever....why can't I be as clever?

Wine is raisin paste you know?

  • Best guac on the planet? Pancho's Backyard in Cozumel. Worth the trip just for that.

By Blogger PatrickMead, at 8/24/2005 12:42:00 PM

  • Amen to the Yankees. I love Da Bums.

Tiger will break Nicklaus's major Record. The boys got staying power plus he is from Cypress, CA.

Lucky you though I enjoy teaching 40 year olds that got a different Jesus when they were raised in the church.

    Hummer's are and extension of.....

Guacamole was a staple when I worked at Whittier church their were trees everywhere.

By Blogger happytheman, at 8/24/2005 12:45:00 PM

  • Patrick - Thanks. Now I have a bona fide excuse to go to Cozumel. Practice my Spanish and continue the pursuit of the perfect guacamole recipe.

By Blogger Mike, at 8/24/2005 02:49:00 PM

  • a decent guac recipe

2-3 avocadoes (diced, but not mashed)
1/2 pint of cherry tomatoes (quartered)
1-2 ears of roasted corn (with a sharp knife cut the kernels off, moving down the ear)
1 medium red onion (chopped fine)
    cilantro (chopped fine, to taste)
2-3 serrano peppers (chopped fine, deveined and deseeded, if the heat is too much)
1-2 cloves garlic (mashed and chopped fine)
    sea salt (to taste)
1-2 limes (juiced, depends on size)
    red wine vinegar (2-3 dashes)
extra virgin olive oil (a drizzle)

important...use a fork to mix together vigorously, but don't mash the avocadoes, you want it to be chunky

By Blogger hermit jeremy, at 8/25/2005 07:02:00 AM

  • Don't worry, the A's will bump them out. Overrated? I give you...the Yankees...with the most overrated player...Derek Jeter.

By Blogger Tim Lewis, at 8/25/2005 11:23:00 AM

  • Leaving sugar out of Dr. Pepper is like leaving the avocados out the guacamole...a terrible waste...like not having Yankees in the Series.

By Blogger James, at 8/26/2005 12:04:00 PM

  • Guacamole? Absolutely. Alfredo's on S. 14th. Now that I know you're a fellow addict I'll watch out for you in the drive-through!
